My 5 Favorite Lingerie Photographers
I spend a heck of a lot of time looking at photographs of people in lingerie, and yet I’m just not organized enough to actually express my thoughts about my favorite lingerie photographers. This post is to share some of my favorites with you, but also to remind me about the photographers I love so much. I asked my Facebook fans who some of their favorites were so I could compile some more names– I’m always looking for more lingerie photography to absorb. See who my top five are and let me know what you think!
Lillian Bassman
Lillian Bassman is the ultimate lingerie photographer. I love the way she portrayed a glimpse into a life by way of lingerie and she had such a distinct and compelling style. For me, her black and white images of lingerie really set a standard for how women in lingerie can be a compelling subject in photography.
Ellen von Unwerth
Ellen von Unwerth is my favorite lingerie photographer, bar none. I feel like she has such a sense of fun and whimsy that really makes her photographs come to life. I really love how her subjects always seem to be having the best time in her shots.
Tasya von Ree is not primarily a lingerie photographer, but I do like the gritty, almost surreal quality of her images of women wearing lingerie. I feel like her perspective seems almost sinister, but in a very intriguing and attractive way.
Vivienne Mok’s photos are really so magical, it’s like all my lingerie dreams coming to life. She has an extremely distinct style that just speaks to my love of romance and fantasy. If I could choose one photographer who I wish was documenting my own life, it would probably be her.
I adore Viva van Story’s pin-up vibe– it’s so cheeky. Even though her style is modeled after classic pin ups, it’s still instantly recognizable (and she and Miss Mosh are such a perfect pair!) I would love to do a shoot with her one day.
Now that I’ve shared some of my favorites with you, I’d love to hear some of the lingerie photographers that make you sit up and take notice. If you post some wonderful ones I may have to do a follow up post!
I really love the ethereal look of Vivienne Mok’s photos
Aren’t they just fantastic? I would definitely love some prints– they have such a powerful atmosphere.

Some really beautiful and very sexy photos.
A beautiful selection.
Hmm.. I really never knew that lingerie photography was a category in itself until recently so I can’t give you my favorite (sorry). But out of the photographers you listed, I love Vivienne Mok!
Guy Bourdin, although not a strictly lingerie photographer, has always taken a lot of my favourite photos of women in lingerie!
I love the femininity and delicacy of Vivienne Mok’s photos
By “lingerie photographer” I really just mean “photographer who has photographed women in lingerie”– I’m not sure it’s such a powerful distinction
. Guy Bourdin is a great photographer, I must admit I don’t know him as well as I should!
I am dazzled by the Vivienne Mok photos. Absolutely dazzled.
Such beautiful photography! I adore Ellen Von Ullenworth, and now am absolutely in love with Vivienne Mok <3 thanks for a great post and for introducing me to her work!
Oh my GOODNESS I need to take colour photography lessons from Vivienne Mok. The way the colour appears saturated yet washed out and etherial all at once is something I try to achieve, but never quite get. Beautiful.
I know! I want to follow her around and say “teach me everything you know”. I read an interview with her and she said she only uses natural light. I seriously don’t know how she does it and I want to know so badly. Perhaps this weekend I will experiment, except that I have only myself as a model and no tripod– tiny issues, I’m sure.
Do you know if all of her photos are digital? I’m not sure how much training either of you have had, so forgive me, but I know that you can do quite a bit when actually developing photos in the traditional sense to get that hazy kind of look that Vivienne has going on. I’m sure you could probably do some of that with photoshop too? But I don’t know anything about photoshop.
Does she use diffusers???
Yes, she uses a digital camera. She doesn’t mention any other equipment except for lenses. She may use photoshop, but she makes it sound like there isn’t intense post-production (may be untrue).
Here is the interview I got my info from: http://jrphoto.wordpress.com/spotlight-interview-fashion-photographer-vivienne-mok/
Like everyone else, I am enamored by Vivienne Mok! I could see the new La Perla line working beautifully with her style. Another vivacious photographer I love is Steven Meisel! He’s done a bit of everything at this point, always with a sharp glamour (Google image search steven meisel + lingerie photography). And his photoshoot for Vogue Italia with plus-sized models in lingerie: http://www.vogue.it/en/magazine/cover-story/2011/06/belle-vere
Wonderful collection!
Oh, I love that Vogue Italia shoot. Mostly because Tara Lynn is incredible.
What a fab idea for a post! This really captured my attention because as a stylist of lingerie I am always looking for fantastic photographers with a signature style to work with, and I am also regularly looking at the work of a few artists you mentioned above.
I am a huge fan of Von Unwerth and Bassman’s work and would certainly love to create some work as captivating as theirs. I only recently learned of Viva Van Story when Cora released her shots (which btw didn’t she do an amazing job of modelling?!) and I have to say the work tempts me to expand my portfolio into the pin-up genre. It was great seeing some more of her work which you gathered here. Thanks. x
